AMERICA PRAYS

J. Edwin Orr observed, “No great spiritual awakening has begun anywhere in the world apart from united prayer.” Prior to the Great Awakening, Jonathan Edwards, along with several colleagues, issued what was called “The National Prayer Accord.” It was a call to united prayer throughout New England. God moved in response to those prayers, and America

experienced an incredible awakening.

America is again in need of a great spiritual awakening. What might happen if churches across the country committed to pray for awakening? What if the nation could be covered in prayer 24/7?

America Prays is a movement of churches covering America in 24/7 prayer. As a multiethnic, interdenominational, Jesus-centered prayer movement, America Prays has a vision to unite 40,000 churches to adopt a monthly day of prayer to pray for a spiritual awakening in America.

“In January 2009, churches in Austin, Texas, under the leadership of Pastor Trey Kent, and churches in Bellingham, Washington, under the leadership of Pastor Jason Hubbard, began covering their communities in 24/7 prayer. Their model was simple — each church adopted a monthly day of prayer or half day of prayer. Believers prayed in 30- or 60-minute segments from home, school, work or church” – Americaprays.org.

“On January 1, 2017, Pastor Brian Alarid and a group of pastors launched New Mexico Prays using this same model. Today there are over 100 churches in 27 cities and towns that are covering New Mexico in unceasing prayer. On October 9, 2017, we launched America Prays to unite and equip 40,000 churches in 24/7 prayer for a national spiritual awakening. By spring 2018, the movement had spread to other nations, and we launched World Prays to serve as a relational network of pastors and leaders who are covering their nations in 24/7 prayer” Americaprays.org.

America has been changing for decades. Her move away from Biblical values is evident. In some cases, the move was gradual and unintentional. In other cases, there has been a direct attempt to alter the course of the nation. The pandemic, racial tensions, and the political divide have exposed a radical departure from a Biblical worldview.

We cannot legislate our way back to a Biblical worldview. We cannot reason our way back to a dependence on God. There is a need for a spiritual awakening in this country. There are leaders in government, media, and business who need to know Jesus.

America Prays is an opportunity to unite in prayer with churches across the country to pray for a spiritual awakening. Could it be that we would see an awakening in our day? What might happen if churches united in prayer to pray for your community and then partnered to reach the community for Christ?
