Change in Presidency of the Missionary Church / Cambio en la Presidencia de la Iglesia Misionera
Dear Missionary Church,
It is with a heavy heart that the General Oversight Council of the Missionary Church announces the removal of Rev. Steve Jones as president of the Missionary Church. In accordance with the Constitution of the Missionary Church, Vice President Jimmy Santiago will become the interim president until next year's General Conference, and the GOC will appoint an interim vice president to serve until next year's General Conference.
In making this decision we first followed the Bible, which requires overseers to be above reproach (1 Timothy 3:2-7). Of the various requirements that this portion of scripture gives, we want to clarify that the removal of Rev. Steve Jones is not related to sexual immorality or theft. But this passage presents many important qualifications for the leader to remain above reproach. The failure to correct concerns in this regard that were shared personally and corporately over several years resulted in a deep erosion of his leadership within the Missionary Church.
Second to scripture, we followed the Constitution of the Missionary Church, which tasks the General Oversight Council with the responsibility of conducting an annual performance evaluation of the president. In the event of "unworthy conduct of any official elected by the General Conference," the Constitution also authorizes the GOC to "make a judicious investigation of the case and to take such steps as are necessary" and to "assume the role and responsibilities of General Conference and act in its stead when Conference is not in session."
As a result of each of these, the GOC regrettably but overwhelmingly elected to remove Rev. Steve Jones as president due to a pattern of "unworthy conduct" in the office of president that has occured in the leadership of and communication with staff, Ministry Leadership Council, General Oversight Council, and other denominational members. The GOC shared these concerns with Rev. Jones in May and of the decision to conduct his annual review. On June 18, the GOC again met with Rev. Jones to inform him of the outcome and reason for his removal, and that it felt led through much prayer and deliberation that it is in the best interest of the Missionary Church to implement this immediate change. A severance agreement has been offered to assist Rev. Jones in this time of transition.
While this change of leadership may be unexpected to each of us in our human understanding of expectations, it comes as no surprise to our Father. It also does not alter our mission nor will it deter us from our commitment to the Great Commission and seeing the multiplication of disciples, churches, and networks to the fourth generation. It also does not dilute our appreciation and gratitude for the many accomplishments and successes that were contributed over the past nine years of Rev. Jones’ presidency. His many edifying messages and sermons, encouragement during and navigation of the pandemic, leadership in completing our Articles of Faith, and excellent representation to the National Association of Evangelicals are just a few of the permanent marks he made on our history while also advancing our mission.
The GOC, MLC, and national office staff are united and working together to lead us through this transition and to ensure the responsibilities of the ministry continue to be met. We will continue to update you regularly as we do so, and if you have further questions or concerns, your regional director or district superintendent is prepared and available to address those personally for you. Furthermore, times of prayer with GOC and MLC members will be planned for future dates at several regional and district offices. Missionary Church members from any district or region are invited to participate at any of the dates or locations once they are announced.
Finally, you are in our prayers, and we covet your prayers for our denomination, its staff and leadership, and its mission, as well as for our brother and his family during this time of transition. It has been and continues to be our prayer that what the enemy intended for harm, our Father intends for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.

Es con un corazón cargado que el Concilio de Supervisión General (GOC) de la Iglesia Misionera anuncia la destitución del Rev. Steve Jones como presidente de la Iglesia Misionera. De acuerdo con la Constitución de la Iglesia Misionera, el vicepresidente Jimmy Santiago ocupará el cargo de presidente interino hasta la Conferencia General del próximo año, y el GOC nombrará a un vicepresidente interino que sirva hasta la Conferencia General del próximo año.
